Stop comparing Ghana and Nigerian artists because they are incoparable in terms of infrastructures and population. Since the Nigerian musician Asake performed at the O2 Arena in London, pulling a whole capacity crowd at the show, several netizens are asking Ghanaian artists to follow suit without considering the infrastructure in the country.
Ghanaians do not support their entertainment industry, yet they pressure the artists to provide quality performances and sell Ghana to the world. It is doable, but not now, because Ghana artists have limited support.
Sacrificing yourself for Ghana should not be the topmost priority for the artists because previous individuals who did it did it in vain. Ghanaians will lift you and drop you to the ground. Former great artists prioritized national interest but are now living in abject poverty.
The Ghana system does not support its citizens, and the citizens themselves do not help one another. Hence, the capacity to fill the O2 Arena is impossible for almost any Ghanaian artist today. Let’s build the system that will make our artists shine.
Also, we should consider the populations of Ghana and Nigeria before making any comparisons because the people matter. Nigeria’s population in 2021 is 213.4 million while Ghana’s is 32.83 million, making Nigeria’s population about 6.5 times larger than Ghana’s population, so why compare the two countries?
Since Nigeria is more populous than Ghana, Nigerians in the diaspora will also be more than Ghanaians in the diaspora, and considering how Nigerians support themselves compared to Ghanains, it would not be a surprise for Asake to fill the O2 Arena to the total capacity.
Shatta Wale is right when he said, “If we combine all the prominent artists in Ghana music industry today, we will be able to fill the O2 Arena like Asake and Burna Boy in 3035. The pressure our Ghanaian fans give us is too much. They want us to do big things like Nigerian singers, which is impossible.”
