Stonebwoy reveals TGMA is as significant as Grammys and BET
Stonebwoy, a Ghanaian dancehall artiste known privately as Livingstone Etse Satekla, is a multi-award-winning reggae/dancehall artist. He recently expressed his admiration for the Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMA), saying it is on par with other internationally renowned music awards like the Grammys and BET. This statement is believed to be a step towards appreciating and cherishing Ghana-based award schemes and events.
The well-known singer-songwriter emphasised the need to recognise regional accomplishments. She was most recently recognised with the esteemed TGMA Artiste of the Year award. Stonebwoy recently discussed his thoughts on the TGMA’s function in identifying and promoting the commitment of Ghanaian musicians in an interview with Berla Mundi on TV3.
The “Therapy” hitmaker highlighted again how important he thinks it is to support local award ceremonies even as he hopes to receive recognition on a global scale and win prizes like the Grammys or BET awards. He emphasised that, similar to how the TGMA functions in Ghana, these international awards effectively function as local events in their nations.
“As much as we would like to go outside national borders and win a Grammy, a Latin Grammy, or a BET, we have to acknowledge that those are domestic accolades for Americans. We must develop our local prizes as a result. What would we have if not for the Ghana Music Awards? I would not wish to be excluded. Like last year, I gave out awards even on the days I wasn’t performing. I genuinely appreciate it,” he said.
KiDi was also awarded Best Collaboration of the Year on that same night. He defeated Mr. Drew, Oseikrom Sikani, Amerado, King Paluta, FRA, and Akwaboah to take home the trophy. The ever-elegant Naa Ashorkor and the charming Chris Attoh hosted the 25th TGMA, a magical musical evening.
A constellation of stars, including King Promise, Kuami Eugene, Mr. Drew, Efya, Amaarae, Nacee, King Paluta, Mzbel, Okyeame Kwame, Reggie Rockstone, and Amerado, brought the stage to life with their performances. Every performance was a sellout, demonstrating Ghanaian music’s depth and universal appeal.
Stonebwoy shows appreciation to his fans and family after the victory:
