NPP determined to prosecute Ato Forson over ambulance purchase trial
NPP, the New Patriotic Party, has declared sufficient evidence to charge Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, the minority leader and former deputy minister of finance, in the ongoing trial over the purchase of an ambulance.
In addition to other allegations, Dr. Ato Forson, Sylvester Anemana, and private businessman Richard Jakpa are on trial for allegedly purposefully causing the state to lose €2.37 million on a deal to buy 200 ambulances for the Ministry of Health.
Nonetheless, the state has dropped its lawsuit against Sylvester Amemana. On Thursday, May 23, 2024, Mr. Jakpa said in court that the attorney general had repeatedly contacted him to assist in smearing Dr. Ato Forson in his testimony.
“I don’t understand why the A-G will accuse me of defending A1 [Ato Forson] when I’m here to defend myself. On several occasions, the A-G has engaged me at odd hours to help him make a case against A1 [Ato Forson], and I have evidence for that. If he pushes me, I will open Pandora’s box,” Jakpa angrily cried in open court.
Additionally, the NDC made public an audio tape on Tuesday that claimed it was a discussion between Mr. Dame and the third accused. A portion of the recording that Johnson Asiedu Nketia, the National Chairman of the NDC, played included the Attorney-General’s voice, pending verification, requesting that Mr. Jakpa obtain a medical leave of absence from court until he returns to the nation.
Since then, the party has demanded Mr. Dame’s “unconditional and immediate dismissal.” To rebuild trust in the Attorney General’s office and Ghana’s legal system overall, we would like to make urgent demands in light of the scandalous nature of this tape and other evidence we have given you.
“Godfred Dame should immediately and unconditionally resign or be fired for putting the esteemed positions of Attorney General and Minister of Justice into disrepute and drawing public criticism. Mr. Dame is unfit to serve as the minister of justice and the attorney general.” Mr. Asiedu Nketia declared, “He is unfit to be the leader of the Ghanaian Bar,” he added.
According to 3News, the NPP has vigorously defended the Attorney General, emphasizing that Mr. Jakpa’s accusation is only the NDC’s most recent ruse to ensure that the Attorney General dropped Ato Forson’s trial.
“Thus, the most recent accusation made by Richard Jakpa, the third accused and a friend of Cassiel Ato Forson in this disastrous ambulance purchase deal, is only another ruse designed to impede Ato Forson’s prosecution and damage the integrity and standing of the Attorney-General.
