Minority mps vow to oppose new taxes from Akufo-Addo
During the mid-year budget review in 2023, the minority party in parliament declared it would obstruct any attempt by the administration to enact new taxes. Cassiel Ato Forson, the minority leader, told Joy News that his caucus would compel the government to cut spending in its place.
In his accusation, Forson claimed that the administration intended to “live large on the back of the people of Ghana.” In light of the current economic crisis, he worries that higher taxes will burden Ghanaians even more.
Ato Forson stated:
“If I look carefully, there is a massive room for expenditure cuts, but the government obviously is indiscipline, and they don’t seem to care.” “So they need to cut that kind of expenditure, and if I am the one in charge or responsible, I would rather go for a cut in expenditure as against a tax measure or an increase in taxation.”
According to Citi News, Forson said that he wouldn’t be surprised by increased taxes in the mid-year budget. He clarified that the new IMF agreement might include provisions for these new taxes.
Ato Forson further stated:
“I won’t be surprised if the government introduces new measures because if you read the MEFP, the IMF is asking for additional measures of about 1% of GDP, and I don’t know where that is going to come from.”
