Memphis Depay talks about his Ghanaian dance with Jeremy Frimpong after Netherland's win
Memphis Depay talked candidly about his famous dance celebration during Thursday’s international friendly between the Netherlands and Canada. As the Dutch squad prepared for the next European Championship in Germany, the 30-year-old hit the mark.
After failing to complete the requirements to activate his Atletico Madrid deal, Memphis will become a free agent on June 30. Memphis teamed up with Jeremie Frimpong to break down a stubborn Canadian team and score the first goal. According to Sportstar, seven minutes after Depay’s goal, Frimpong scored the second goal with an incredible effort, opening the floodgates.
Ronald Koeman’s side then sealed a commanding 4-0 victory with goals from Wout Weghorst and Virgil Van Dijk. Meanwhile, the game’s talking point was Depay’s celebration following his 45th goal for Oranje.
The former Manchester United forward, whose mother is Dutch and whose father is Ghanaian, showcased a local dance from the West African nation. Memphis, also known as “Adowa,” skillfully demonstrated his proficiency and understanding of the well-known dance ingrained in Ghanaian tradition.
He danced with Frimpong, who also has Ghanaian heritage, as they both exhibited a connection with their roots. The Europe Lad cited the 30-year-old saying to ESPN that he explained why he decided to celebrate that way: “I was doing a Ghanaian dance with Frimpong after my goal. He is a Ghana boy like me. Of course, we represent The Netherlands, but this is in our blood,” Memphis said.
