Jurgen Klopp wants nothing to do with Liverpool 'quadruple' talk
Jurgen Klopp, Liverpool’s manager, claimed Thursday it is far too early in the season to talk about another quadruple bid by his club after they reached the League Cup final. Two years ago, the Premier League team had a chance to win four trophies in a single season after overcoming Chelsea, who would face them in the final at Wembley next month.
The Reds lost to Real Madrid in the Champions League final. They were barely defeated by Manchester City in the Premier League final on the final day of play, so they were forced to settle for a domestic Cup after defeating Chelsea in the FA Cup final.
This season, Liverpool is battling on four fronts once more. Klopp’s team is five points ahead of the Premier League and into the Europa League’s round of 16 as they get ready for Sunday’s FA Cup fourth-round matchup at home against second-tier Norwich.
Less than twenty-four hours after Liverpool defeated Fulham 3-2 on aggregate in the League Cup semi-final, Klopp stated on Thursday, “I didn’t think about it, to be honest, because we are far off having ‘four finals.'”
“We’re eligible for one. Planning the next one before you finish the last one is absurd.” The manager stated: “It’s doubtful we will reach all three finals; it’s just the nature of it.” In the meantime, as Liverpool and Egypt’s Mohamed Salah prepared to return to England from the Africa Cup of Nations, Klopp attempted to diffuse a possible club vs nation dispute.
To give himself the best chance of being available for the Africa Cup of Nations final, should Egypt be involved in the big match on February 11 in Abidjan, the forward has returned to England for treatment for a hamstring tear.
Jurgen Klopp stressed that he had not “intentionally” spoken out of turn, with Liverpool and Egypt keen to uphold Salah’s best interests. “Most people in Egypt understand the situation because we have the same target as Egypt — make Mo fit as quickly as possible,” Jurgen Klopp added.
“That’s all we want, and that’s how it always is. If a player is injured, we try everything to help him to get fit as quickly as possible. All parties agreed that it makes sense he is doing rehab here. We have a season to play, so we want him fit, but if he is fit earlier, then as long as Egypt is still in the tournament, he will go back; that is clear. Then it’s a win-win.” Jurgen Klopp stated.
