Inaki Williams has no regrets picking Ghana over Spain despite struggles with Black Stars
Inaki Williams has shared candidly about his difficulties with Ghana’s senior national squad. The attacker, who was born in Spain, chose to become a member of the Black Stars in 2022, but he has only scored once for Ghana.
The star of Athletic Bilbao suffered at the Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast earlier this year, and he also had a challenging 2022 FIFA World Cup. Williams is optimistic that things will work out for the Black Stars in the end, despite the fact that he has been playing at a high level for Athletic Bilbao.
“I would never have imagined this. I had to make a decision and I don’t regret being able to represent the country of my parents and my family, to go back to my origins, to be able to travel more and see my loved ones in Ghana,” Williams shared with Club del Deportista, as quoted by Ghana Soccernet.
Williams also believes his decision snub Spain had resulted in one of his best periods as a player.
“It’s true that things didn’t work out as we’d all hoped, but it’s true that on a sporting and personal level, it helped me a lot.”
The technical team exempted the 29-year-old, thus he was unable to play in Ghana’s friendly against Nigeria and Uganda during the March international break. When Bilbao plays Real Mallorca in the Copa del Rey final on Saturday, Williams and his younger brother Nico Williams have the chance to create history. According to Transfermarkt, he has contributed five assists and 11 goals to the Basque club’s total this season in all competitions.
