Herve Renard: Nigeria reportedly switching attention to ex Saudi Arabia coach for Super Eagles role
Herve Renard has been eyed by the Nigerian Football Association. The Nigerian Football Federation is apparently courting Herve Renard, a French tactician, to become the Super Eagles’ next coach. After Jose Peseiro’s departure in February, the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations finalists have not yet revealed their new national coach.
Finidi George, a former forward for the Super Eagles, was named temporary coach and assumed leadership for the March friendlies against Ghana and Mali. The NFF is still looking for a new coach, though, and some people don’t think Finidi is the right person for the position following a win and a loss during the international break.
According to French Football Weekly, Renard, who has managed the French women’s team since 2012, will step down this summer. Renard guided Ivory Coast to the 2015 AFCON championship and Zambia to the 2012 AFCON championship.
“In the back of my mind, there is the 2026 World Cup, and I hope that this will be my third World Cup as a coach,” he told L’Equipe. Before the Super Eagles’ return to the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers in June against South Africa and Benin, Nigeria will aim to finalize a contract. It is also said that the Cameroonian Football Federation is watching Renard.
