Ga priest, a 63-year-old fights off calls for his arrest for marrying 12-year-old girl, says it's ignorance
Ga priest, the Nunguan shrine Gborbu Wulomo is defending itself against demands that its 63-year-old priest be taken into custody because of his marriage to a child. Following the March 20 marriage ceremony, there was a great deal of resentment and calls for the imprisonment of Nuumo Borketey Laweh Tsuru XXXIII, the traditional priest.
The Gborbu Wulomo temple claims that Naa Yomo Ayemuade must be a virgin to fulfill her assigned role of tending to one of the 99 Ga-Adangbe group deities. In order to protect her from male sexual abuse and to guarantee that her purity was upheld, it was decided to hold the marriage ceremony in public.
According to Joynews, Nii Bortey Kofi Frankwa II, a temple representative, clarified that Gborbu Wulomo’s choice of 12-year-old Naa Yomo Ayemuade is a spiritual rite that started six years prior. She is supposed to carry out a duty in the shrine that is customarily assigned to virgins alone.
He claims those protesting the development do not appreciate the Ga-Dangbe tradition’s principles. To protect her from male sexual abuse and to guarantee that her purity was upheld, it was decided to hold the marriage ceremony in public.
“When somebody makes such a call, it comes from ignorance. First, you need to come closer and ask so that you will appreciate what it is but not take hook, line, and sinker what is being said,” he said at a press conference. It goes beyond what is being preached out there. It is more profound than what is being preached. It is deeper for our spirituality.”
