ECG disconnects Parliament's power over GH¢23 million debt
ECG has caused a stir with the eerie latest action in Parliament House. On February 29, 2024, the National Taskforce disconnected the electrical supply to Parliament House and Job 600 because of a debt of GH¢23 million. The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) task force’s ongoing “Operation Zero Balance” initiative is in line with the failure of the attempt to recover the outstanding debts.
Power was lost for about three minutes despite efforts, but it was eventually brought back by a generator, according to Citi News. The ECG declared that from February to December 2024, it will conduct a national metre audit, checking the integrity of both post-paid and prepaid metres.
The ECG aims to increase customer confidence in the bills it sends, gather outstanding payments from clients, and record consumption readings to ensure that they match what ECG agents have been reading. To preserve trust and prevent running into imposters, customers have been advised to confirm the identity cards of ECG employees when they visit.
