Dr. Bawumia presents NAPO as 2024 presidential election running mate
Dr Bawumia has finally revealed his plans to contest the upcoming presidential elections with the support of the former energy minister. Regarding his selection of a running partner for the December 7 presidential election, President Akufo-Addo conferred with Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the flagbearer of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP).
Elton Brobbey, a JoyNews correspondent covering presidential affairs, reports that a meeting was held at the Jubilee House yesterday night. Vice President Dr Bawumia gave the President his selection at the conference.
Dr Bawumiah reveals his running mate for the December 2024 elections.
Elton Brobbey explained that Dr Bawumia’s decision was ultimately approved despite President Akufo-Addo’s advice and ideas being given. According to him, the selected candidate is a 56-year-old physician who completed his studies at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology.
“He was elected to the Parliament for the first time in 2008 and re-elected in 2012, 2016 and 2020. He was a member of the Parliamentary Health Appointments, Defence, and Interior Committees. He was appointed Education Minister by President Akufo-Addo in 2017 and is currently the Energy Minister. “Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, popularly known as NAPO, is the name,” he stated.
According to the JoyNews presidential correspondent, it’s uncertain if the Vice President’s selection of Dr. Opoku Prempeh as his running mate was affected by the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) poll. He did see that the party’s grassroots seemed to like the Energy Minister.
He continued, saying that Dr. Bawumia had previously announced Dr. Opoku Prempeh as his running mate. This was not shocking even after Dr Bawumia became victorious in the NPP flagbearership contest. In the meantime, the NPP flagbearer is anticipated to formally meet with the party council to present his pick. An official announcement will be made after acceptance.
