Cristiano Ronaldo breaks his silence after Portugal's dramatic victory over Slovenia during penalty shootout
Cristiano Ronaldo was on a rollercoaster of emotions during Portugal’s game yesterday. After Portugal defeated Slovenia through a penalty shootout, Cristiano Ronaldo responded to the team’s tenacious effort to advance to the European Championship quarterfinals. The Al-Nassr player’s spot-kick was saved by Slovenian custodian Jan Oblak in extra time, meaning the Selacao team lost the match.
But thanks to a brilliant save from custodian Diogo Costa, Portugal overcame their opponents in the Round of 16 3-0 on penalties, and the renowned attacker made up for his blunder. Ronaldo went from tears to victory in a thrilling match on Monday night at Deutsche Bank Park.
Cristiano Ronaldo posted on social media immediately after the game: “Inexplicable moments. Let’s give it our all! Thank you, Portugal.” The victory keeps the 2016 winners in the competition. On Friday, July 5, they will take on France, who defeated Belgium in the competition’s quarterfinal. Ronaldo declared that the 2024 European Championship would be his final competition, eager to end his career with Portugal on the highest possible note.
“This will be my last Euro, of course. But this does not move me; I’m moved by enthusiasm,” Cristiano Ronaldo said in a post-match interview after the game. “I was sorry for the fans. I’ll always give my best for this shirt, whether I miss it or not. And I’ll do this my whole life. You have to take responsibility.” Ronaldo added.
