Bobrisky: Nigerian crossdresser causes a stir after her release from police custody
Bobrisky has been granted bail. The EFCC, which oversees financial crimes in Nigeria, officially announced the detention of Idris Okuneye, a well-known celebrity transvestite who goes by Bobrisky. The allegations against him include currency tampering and Naira misuse.
Bobrisky, named Idris Okuneye, was accused of mistreating and disfiguring banknotes at a Lagos movie premiere. They claim she “sprayed” bills, which is code for throwing them into the air in gratitude. In Nigeria, “Spraying” is a custom at weddings and other festivities. Since the notes can then be trampled upon when they fall to the ground, this is theoretically illegal.
At the premiere of Ajakaju, produced by actress and producer Eniola Ajao, last month at Film One Circle Mall in the upscale Lekki neighbourhood of Lagos, Bobrisky was accused of spraying money. With almost five million Instagram followers, the celebrity has not yet responded.
Reports released a few hours ago by Instablog indicate that the socialite and crossdresser have been granted bail. However, she has yet to comment on her ordeal and experience, as this is believed to be her first time in jail after her fame.
However, Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) spokesman Dele Oyewale told the BBC that Bobrisky would be charged to court as soon as investigations are concluded, without giving a timeframe.
